Last month, a few of us from the MindJam mentor team laced up our running shoes and tackled the Lincoln 10k together. It was an amazing day – great atmosphere, brilliant company, and the perfect reminder of how physical exercise isn’t just good for your body, but for your brain too.
At MindJam, we work closely with young people who love gaming, creativity, and technology. But here’s something a lot of gamers might not know: moving your body will make you a better gamer!
It’s not just about stamina or reflexes. Regular exercise improves mood, concentration, memory, problem solving and even emotional regulation – all essential skills for not just excelling at games, but also enjoying them in a healthy, balanced way. That intense Rocket League match? That clutch moment in Marvel Rivals? They both benefit from a calm, focused, and resilient mindset.
And I’ve seen the benefits firsthand – not just through the young people we support, but through my own journey.
In fact, MindJam was *born* during a jog.
Almost to this day 5 years ago, I was out on a regular run, head buzzing with thoughts about how there must be a better way to support young people who are struggling, in a way that truly connects. Somewhere between miles three and four, it hit me: why not use games as the tool to create meaningful, positive connections, a catalyst to build confidence, self esteem and repair broken trust?
That one jog changed everything!
Since then, MindJam has grown into something truly special – a safe, supportive space where young people can build confidence, learn to manage emotions, feel seen, learn new skills and realise their incredible potential; all while doing what they love.
I’ll never forget how important that run was, and how important physical movement is to spark ideas, boost wellbeing, reduce stress and anxiety and help you become the best gamer you can be!
The good news? You don’t need to run a 10k to feel the benefits.
Here are some types of exercise our mentees can try to support their gaming performance and mental health:
- Walking
- Stretching or Yoga
- Dancing
- Rebounding (mini trampoline)
- Tai Chi or Qigong
- Desk exercises or chair yoga
And for those who want to stay in the world of games while exercising, here are some fantastic fitness games on Nintendo Switch and VR:
On Nintendo Switch:
- Ring Fit Adventure
- Just Dance
- Fitness Boxing 2
- Nintendo Switch Sports
In VR:
- Beat Saber
- Supernatural (Meta Quest)
- Thrill of the Fight
- Dance Central VR

Whether it’s a walk outside, a quick stretch between matches, or half an hour of swinging lightsabers in VR, there are so many ways to blend movement with gaming. It’s all about finding what works for you.
So whether you’re a casual gamer, or a competitive esports player, don’t underestimate the power of movement. Your body, your brain, and your in-game performance, will thank you.
