Monika M
Mentor
Hi, I’m Monika
I’m a creative person with many hobbies and passions, and a late diagnosed AuDHDer.
Over the past decade, I have been working in education and I have witnessed how the system fails and disregards young people, especially those who don’t fit into the box.
I was that non-typical kid, and gaming helped me immensely in getting through school. It shaped who I am today and it still remains an important part of my life. Growing up, I had lots of online friends, enjoyed anime, art, graphic design and music. My first games were Tetris, Super Mario Bros, Tekken 3 and Final Fantasy VII (yes, old people games).
My special interest is psychology and, alongside mentoring, I am also a trainee counsellor in the final year of my Level 4 Diploma. In my most recent role (Specialist Learning Mentor – ASC), I have been mentoring neurodivergent students who are struggling with mental health, identity, and understanding their diagnoses. Mentoring can help with discovering your unique talents, building confidence, unmasking, feeling more comfortable, and finding your voice. The best part is that we can do all of this while having fun.
My approach has always been relational, creative, interest-based, neuro-affirmative and person-centred. I think that a safe and respectful relationship with a trusted adult who ‘gets it’ can make a huge difference in a young person’s life. That’s why I’m grateful for Mindjam and very proud of what we do.
As an art lover, I can help you with both digital and traditional media. Sometimes it might be difficult to come up with ideas, or start and finish a project, and I can assist you every step of the way. I’m involved in the community, run Magic The Gathering and Art Clubs, and encourage young people to connect with others through common interests.
I am friendly, empathetic and non-judgemental. I will always work with your skills and strengths, respect your values and choices, and never force or pressure you into completing tasks. No eye contact required and bad days very much allowed – we all have them and you can always be yourself. Mentoring is your time and you are in charge. I’m happy to assist you in whatever feels helpful on the day.
It takes a lot of courage to take the first step, and I’m already so proud of you for looking for a mentor. I would love to learn about your special interests and talk (or type) just about anything.
