Mentor

Hi I’m Andy, a mentor with MindJam specialising in console gaming. I’m also a photographer, boulderer and occasional trombone player.

I started working in SEN environments in 2007 as a Learning Support Assistant and then a Learning Support Manager. Initially I supported young adults with physical and learning disabilities in both classroom and healthcare environments, then worked with people with autism in a collaborative woodworking studio. I’ve also supported young people and adults in day care provisions, their own homes and the community. Talking about games is always a good way to share interests and knowledge, allowing us to talk as equals.

My gaming journey started back in the 1980’s with a wood veneered Atari 2600, spending long hours playing Pitfall and Yars Revenge, arguing with my brother about who’s turn it was and who was hogging it. I then progressed onto the Atari ST where my favourite game was Dungeon Master – this was also played in my primary school on a Friday afternoon in the class for less attentive students. Our teacher Mr Maxwell would bring his computer in, and we all sat round the monitor making collective choices about what to do next. This was my first experience of gaming being used to support students who found it difficult to fit into the normal routines of the classroom and is something that has informed my work with others throughout my career.

I’ve experienced gaming from the very early 8bit boxes through the evolution of graphics and gaming design to the almost photorealistic levels the current consoles run.

I am fully DBS checked, have full up-to-date safeguarding training and am experienced in supporting people with Autism, ADHD and additional needs.

Favourite Games

Fallout series, GTA, Red Dead Redemption2, all the Assassin’s creed games, Skyrim, Starfield and pretty much any Bethesda game. I also enjoy trying out indie games that are available on Xbox game pass, currently surrounded by pages of handwritten notes while playing through Blue Prince.

Hobbies

Outside of gaming I am a photographer, mainly documentary and psychogeography landscapes using analogue 35mm and medium format cameras. I also enjoy bouldering at my local climbing walls, watching films and going for walks in the country.

We'd love to hear from you.
