Tom Mumford

Mentor

I started out working in TV and film and worked in a number of different roles, but mostly as a camera operator and producer later on. Whilst working on various projects I was lucky enough to live, work and travel in a number of different countries across Europe, Asia, Africa and the Americas. I spent a lot of time in Thailand, where I also taught English. My wife and I moved back to the UK in 2015, where I worked as a project manager for a London TV studio. We both decided that we’d like a change in career and I started retraining to become a physics teacher.

I’m now in my seventh year of teaching and although there are plenty of challenges, the kids always put a smile on my face! Working with children from all kinds of backgrounds, abilities and challenges is hugely rewarding!

Most recently I have worked as Head of Year alongside my teaching role, which has given me further insight into our most challenged students. I now have a much greater understanding of their thought processes, coping strategies and possible triggers. This role has also seen me work extensively with parents, family members and support staff to ensure the best outcomes for our students. I have experience in supporting students with Autism, ADHD, anxiety, trauma, and other issues.

Why physics? Easy, I have always loved figuring out how things work, how they’re made and what they look like when you take them apart! I’ve also been fascinated by space, spacecraft and space exploration for as long as I can remember. Physics covers pretty much all of this! I’m a strong believer that teachers should love their subject!

My first memories of gaming are on my Playstation 1! I later moved onto the Nintendo64 where Mario Kart, Mario Party, Perfect Dark and Goldeneye were firm favourites. As a teenager I had a PC and enjoyed strategy games like Age of Empires and Command & Conquer.

I am fully DBS checked and have up to date safeguarding training as a current teacher. I have received training in online safety, child protection, mental health issues, the autistic spectrum and PDA.
