Matty Alexander

Hello, I’m Matty Alexander, a seasoned Game Narrative Designer with over a decade’s worth of experience shaping stories in senior roles at indie companies and Oxford innovation startups. I have specialised in creating immersive experiences that resonate with players in the gaming, XR, and interactive media realms. My focus is on crafting games that leave a lasting impact, guided by a mix of humanitarian values and diverse experiences. As a neurodivergent individual, I am aware and up to date with the myriad of comorbidities, and I advocate for mental health and neuroaffirmation, drawing on my own personal challenges to drive positive change.

Throughout my career, I have led projects from concept to excellence, including innovative FPS games and a Gamified Psychology app for personal growth. My skill set covers game and narrative design, Quest design, Role-playing and magic systems. writing, worldbuilding, 3D and technical art, utilising engines like Unity, Twine, Godot, and more.

Outside of gaming, my interests span mainstream and cult media in various forms, from games to films and beyond. I love literature, with an eclectic mix of genres, from ancient mythology to modern philosophy, Sci-fiction, fantasy, fiction, and nonfiction. I enjoy mountain biking and skateboarding for physical activity, watch skateboarding competitions religiously, love comics, particularly from DC and Vertigo, and have a lifelong passion for anime and manga. Additionally, I have a keen interest in board games and pen-and-paper RPGs, with a focus on role-playing and magic systems. Music is my first love though, and I have an eclectic taste in genres, an interest in collecting vinyl, and attending live shows and festivals.

Games-wise, it’d honestly be easier to give you a list of what I don’t like. I couldn’t pick a specific genre that I’m into. I tend to lean towards innovative or interesting experiences. And do enjoy the more experimental size of games.

I like building and crafting games, FPSs, and RPGs of all types. Linear narrative games AAA or Indie titles. Titles like Zelda or Dark Souls where you get the feeling that the world you’ve entered existed way before you got there. But equally am fond of “turn your brain off games”- Titles like Skate, Monster Hunter, or Katamari Damacy. In truth, I’m open to trying most anything.

As a mentor, my goal is to foster the next generation’s growth in a space that’s both engaging and supportive. Having garnered experience in various senior roles within indie AAA companies and startups, I am confident in my ability to bring a wealth of knowledge and a unique perspective to the table. I envision creating an atmosphere at MindJam that goes beyond the conventional. My goal extends beyond imparting industry insights; it’s about nurturing individuals to thrive authentically. Drawing on my own experiences, both triumphs and challenges, I am committed to providing guidance that goes beyond the technical aspects of game design. I believe in fostering a fun and safe environment where the next generation can explore their potential, take risks, and ultimately, flourish in their own distinctive ways.
