Matty Alexander
Mentor
Hello, I’m Matty Alexander, a seasoned Game Narrative Designer with over a decade’s worth of experience shaping stories in senior roles at indie companies and innovative startups. Working as creative director for traditional games, and gamified psychology apps.
As a neurodivergent individual. Living with both Autism and ADHD. It’s made my life challenging, to say the least. As such: I advocate for mental health and neuroaffirmation, drawing on my own personal challenges to drive positive change. I am guided by a mix of humanitarian values and diverse experiences. My main life goal is to advocate for play, As a Human function, I believe it is the greatest gift we have.
My skill set covers Game Design, Narrative design & Quest design, Role-playing and magic systems, writing and worldbuilding.
Games-wise, it’d honestly be easier to give you a list of what I don’t like. I couldn’t pick a specific genre that I’m into. I tend to lean towards innovative or interesting experiences. And do enjoy the more experimental side of games. I like FPSs, and RPGs of all types. Platformers and Action games. I’m a sucker for Metroidvania’s, Linear narrative games or Cosy Indie titles. Titles like Zelda or Dark Souls where you get the feeling that the world you’ve entered existed way before you got there. But equally I am fond of “turn your brain off games”- Titles like Skate, Monster Hunter, or Katamari Damacy. But In truth, I’m open to trying most anything.
Outside of gaming, my interests span mainstream and cult media in various forms, from games to films and beyond. I love literature, with an eclectic mix of genres, from ancient mythology to modern philosophy, Sci-fiction, fantasy, fiction, and nonfiction. I enjoy mountain biking and skateboarding for physical activity, watch skateboarding competitions religiously, love comics, particularly from DC and Vertigo, and have a lifelong passion for anime and manga. Additionally, I have a keen interest in board games and pen-and-paper RPGs, with a focus on role-playing and magic systems. Music is my first love though, and I have an eclectic taste in genres, an interest in collecting vinyl, and attending live shows and festivals.
As a mentor, my goal is to foster the next generation’s growth in a space that’s both engaging and supportive. I am confident in my ability to bring a wealth of knowledge and a unique perspective to the table. I envision creating an atmosphere at MindJam that goes beyond the conventional. I believe in fostering a fun and safe environment where the next generation can explore their potential, take risks, and ultimately, flourish in their own distinctive ways.
