Sam Woods
Mentor
Hi, I’m Sam!
I’ve been a Carer / Support Worker for the last 3 years, caring for a wide range of people with various different disabilities. This has helped to make me a much more patient and empathetic person, and I have developed a passion for helping others both in a physical and/or mental capacity, or in a more general sense just being there on a personal level, to talk and lend a supportive ear.
My primary responsibilities after taking care of basic needs, would be ensuring the health and happiness of the people I care for, and encouraging opportunities for them to gain independence.
I struggled at school having been diagnosed with severe dyslexia, a lot of the time I felt I didn’t fit in and couldn’t connect with my academic studies, this led to me spending more time on my computer where I found an escape in gaming. This helped me find friends, gaining social skills, making me a much more confident person. Over the years not only did gaming improve my dyslexia, in particular my reading ability, it also helped me develop other skills such as, problem solving and multi-tasking.
Since then, I have found I enjoy other activities such as flying drones and editing the footage, being creative through activities like model building and painting. I like being outdoors, hill walking, in winter snowboarding and have recently taken up paddle boarding.
Over the years I have never lost my passion for gaming. Populous, was one of the first games that I could truly lose myself in, it brought me comfort and still hold sentimental meaning to me all these years later
I am genuinely excited for the opportunity to engage with and encourage young people by playing games together, and hope to have the same positive impact for them as games have had for me.
