Richard Miller
Mentor
Hello! My name is Richard, and I’m excited to be part of this journey to support young people through gaming.
I recently graduated from Nottingham Trent University with a degree in Psychology, where I developed a passion for understanding mental health challenges, particularly those affecting young people. My studies covered various topics, from the complexities of neurodivergent experiences to the vital role of play in socio-emotional development. These insights naturally led me to Mindjam, where the facilitation of digital skills and gaming is an innovative and engaging way to connect with and support young people.
My experience working with young people includes facilitating drama workshops for ages 12 to 18, where I helped participants express themselves creatively and explore complex issues like bullying and exam stress. I also spent time volunteering in Sri Lanka, teaching English to pre-schoolers, which deepened my understanding of cultural differences and the universal need for emotional support and connection. These experiences above all else have taught me that all young people are different and require a person cantered approach. Additionally, I have an enhanced DBS.
So what about my interests? Well it goes without saying that gaming has been such an important thing for me! I have fond memories of playing Minecraft with friends, before even Skype was a thing. (Massive credit to my grandparents for footing the phone bill…). As I got a little bit older and discovered football, inevitably a love for FIFA developed. I’ve spent countless hours trying to get Brighton and Hove Albion to lift the Champions League (still trying). Nowadays, I find myself playing a variety of PC games, chief amongst them is Civilisation 6. I’m always open to trying out new games and seeking new adventures.
Beyond the screen, I love to travel and explore, with Lake Bled in Slovenia being my favourite place. I think it’s the same love for travel that I share with my favourite game, Skyrim. It took me ages before I played the main quest because I was more interested in getting lost in the mountains of Tamriel, discovering hidden paths and uncharted adventures. Just like with gaming, exploring new places allows me to experience different perspectives and embrace new challenges—qualities I aim to bring to my mentoring
I look forward to working with young people, using the transformative power of gaming to help them navigate their own daily challenges but also build resilience and confidence.
