George Murphy
Mentor
Hello, I’m George and I’m a current History and War Studies student at York St John
University, and also have plenty of experience working with young people. I was a student
leader in secondary school, Deputy Head Boy of my 6th form and am now a student
representative for History at my University. I am also a Holocaust Educational Trust
ambassador and have worked with young people while volunteering at Holy Trinity Church.
Finally I have also completed several football coaching courses. Through these experiences
I have learnt how to effectively communicate and engage with young people, especially
when dealing with sensitive topics in an educational way.
I have always had a passion for working with and helping young people which derives from
my own personal experiences. When I was younger I struggled to connect and communicate
with the people around me and would often not be understood by my peers. I also have
family members and close friends who are neurodivergent and so have a plethora of
experience talking to and working with neurodivergent people, whether it be helping them to
overcome problems they are experiencing or being able to connect with them in ways others
cannot. Throughout my life I have overcome plenty of challenges and I am excited to have
the opportunity to use these skills I have developed to help other young people through their
own problems and challenges.
Gaming has been a key part of my life for as long as I can remember helping not only to
provide escapism when life got overwhelming but also helping me connect with people
around me, whether it was Lego Star Wars, The Sims or Minecraft with my two sisters or
Deep Rock, Warframe, Fifa or Strategy games with my friends. Gaming has always been
able to provide a social bridge where other activities did not and I therefore fully understand
the powerful positive impact gaming can have on a young person’s life.
Strategy and football games have always been a favourite of mine, whether I was playing
Medieval 2 total war, Hearts of Iron or even modding games to create a Lord of The Rings or
Game of Thrones experience they have allowed me to develop and explore my passionate
love for History or immerse myself in my favourite fantasy worlds. As I got older I also
developed a love for football and with this came my favourite game Football Manager, I’ve
spent hours creating and immersing myself in my own football world through the game.
I also have a passion for content creation, having done several twitch streams, both for
charity and entertainment and I also ran my own football based podcast for a year, not only
speaking on the podcast several times but also doing significant work behind the scenes
such as organising schedules or editing audio footage.
I am delighted to have the opportunity to work with mindjam and use my passion and skill for
gaming to work with young people and make a positive impact on their lives.
