Ben Holman
Mentor
Hi! I’m Ben and I have broad background working with children across a range of settings including those with SEN needs such as Autism, ADHD and PDA.
I have a degree in Biology and originally trained as a primary school teacher. Whilst I enjoyed the impact I had on young people’s lives, since starting my role within MindJam (Sept ’23), I have had a greater agency for focusing on each mentees individual needs.
My sessions revolve specifically around the Adventure Guild aspect of MindJam, where we use roleplay games (currently specifically Dungeons and Dragons) to connect a group of mentees. Here they have the opportunity to work on skills such as teamwork, communication, conflict resolution, identity exploration, problem solving and positive self-esteem – all within the comfortable setting of playing games. I was fortunate enough to work with both James and Leo to help create Adventure Guild and mould it into something our mentees now love!
I have been playing roleplaying games such as D&D for over 10 years, with a range of players. As Dungeon Master, I typically guide players through their world and build it around them. My significant experience within the game now allows to me improvise and customise the sessions to meet specific needs of my mentees.
Some of the groups I run have now been together for well over a year, and have formed firm friendships, many of them communicating outside of sessions via dedicated discord servers. I love my job and the impact it has on young people! The relationships I have built with my mentees, and supporting them in building relationships together is incredibly fulfilling.
I am DBS checked and have completed my safeguarding training.
